How to Teach a Senior About Computer Use

If you’re a caregiver or family member who’s going to take the time to introduce your senior to computer and internet use, then there are a few things that you’re going to need to keep in mind. With a little bit of patience and effort, they’ll be off and surfing the World Wide Web in no time!

• Be patient and understanding; it can take seniors longer to pick up concepts, especially if they are unfamiliar with new technologies
• Keep in mind the limitations that a specific senior has – if they struggle with memory – clearly outline all instructions given as well as providing a visual demonstration – that way if they forget an important step, they have something to look back to. If vision is a problem, maximize the text displayed on the computer or web browser so it doesn’t inhibit their learning
• Simplify the process – start by teaching them the basics; don’t assume they know anything. Teach seniors first how to turn their computer on and off, and how to use the mouse. Then they can progress to more difficult skills, like internet and email use.
• Make navigation simple – create bookmarks and shortcuts to the applications and websites that the senior visits regularly. Also allow the web browser to save login information so the senior automatically has access to their email or website
